The jazz music scene on the Isle of Wight continues to enjoy a popular resurgence with a number of events popping up on the music calendar. One such event that has quite literally struck a chord with its followers is the Northwood House Jazz Social. It’s a relaxed jazz club-style gathering of music lovers and socialites looking for an alternative Friday evening out where they can enjoy good music and good company in equal measure.

Hosted in the iconic Northwood House Ballroom, the vibe at a Jazz Social event is informal and relaxed with quiet, yet sociable chit-chat, very much encouraged in the audience, while guest jazz performers provide the perfect atmosphere.  The next event, The Jazz Social-Autumn Edition takes place on November 15 and is hosted again by the Island’s Jazz supremo Jim Thorn and a number of special guests, who will provide a relaxed and perfectly pitched musical ambiance.

Darren Cool, Northwood House’s enthusiastic event manager, conceived the idea with Jim Thorn about 12 months ago and hosted the first two sell-out events earlier in the year.

Darren said: “Our first Jazz Social’s were remarkably successful with tickets literally flying out of the door. Jim and I wanted to create more of a jazz club vibe which you don’t get elsewhere on the Island. Here you can meet up with friends in a relaxed, yet exclusive-feeling environment, to enjoy fantastic modern jazz played live in front of you. The House Ballroom makes a fantastic location for this cosy experience where the audience are up close and personal to the performers.”

Some tickets are still available for the Jazz Social from the Northwood House website event page and are favourably priced at £12.50 each to include a glass of house wine and a delicious cheese platter to enjoy during the evening. Doors open at 7.15pm with the live jazz starting at 8pm.

Northwood House Christmas Fair is also well worth a visit. If you are looking for some Christmas inspiration, then there is no shortage of local gift fairs on the Island that could be on your radar as we head into the seasonal period.  Some of the best artisan and creative exhibitors can be found at the Northwood House Christmas Fair in Cowes this year on the weekend of November 23 and 24.

Entry to the fair is free and visitors will be spoiled with a fantastic range of gift ideas, as well the chance to enjoy some season refreshments in the confines of the Georgian manor house which always seems so magical at Christmas time. Unlike other events there is no charge for children to meet Father Christmas where they also have the chance to write a letter and give it to him personally while getting a photograph taken.

And if your pet dog is feeling left out, get him or her shampooed and dressed up and bring them along to meet Santa Paws, the Father Christmas for pet pooches, who will be there to have a photo with your four-legged friend and share a Christmas dog biscuit! The fair opens between 10am and 4pm each day.
